PREPARATION OF A CD-ROM VERSION OF THE BACK GUIDE.
Background.
Back problems are very common in the occupational
setting. Following the norms of healthy posture, which basically
teach the correct postures, movements and efforts to adopt
so that they entail the least load on the spine and muscles
as possible, has been shown to reduce the risk of episodes
of back pain. In a similar manner, certain mental attitudes
have been shown to reduce the risk of prolonged pain or relapses.
These norms and attitudes must be clearly understandable
if they are to be applied. With this aim, in addition to developing
printed material (such as the Back Guide or the Manual de
la Espalda), it is especially useful to design elements for
on-going training, using the methods provided by new technologies
in order to communicate this information.
With this objective, the Training Department of El Corte
Inglés and the Kovacs Foundation decided to explore
the possibility of jointly developing a CD-ROM with on-going
training on the prevention of occupational risks and hazards
related to back problems.
Objective.
To design a CD-ROM which effectively communicates
the theoretical and practical bases necessary to reduce the
risk of the appearance, persistence and recurrence of back
problems, so that the worker can learn these tips directly
without the aide of trainers or monitors.
Description.
The CD-ROM includes information about:
-
A description of the back, its structure, how it functions
and the muscles which contribute to its functioning.
-
The mechanisms prompting pain and the treatments which
have been shown to be effective.
-
Norms of healthy posture -which include recommendations
aimed to reduce the load on the spine and the back muscles
during daily activities and at the workplace-.
-
The measures that have been shown to be effective in
reducing the risk of episodes of pain and in speeding
recovery, including physical exercise.
-
Information on the back and its ailments, correcting
mistaken notions that have been shown to worsen the prognosis
for back problems (such as bed rest in the case of pain),
and explaining those which have been shown to be useful
in improving it (such as staying physically active and
exercising regularly).
All of these contents are explained theoretically and are
shown in practical demonstrations by means of multimedia technology.

Status.
In progress. Currently all of the contents have been defined
and the final version of the CD-ROM is being prepared which,
once published will be distributed as widely as possible.
