HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE HEALTH CARE SPONSORED BY THE
KOVACS FOUNDATION
The Kovacs Foundation began its health care
activities in 1989, when it opened its Clinic in the Balearic
Islands. Afterwards, it constituted others in Asturias (1991)
and in Madrid (1994). During that phase, the Clinics focused
exclusively on conservative treatments for back ailments.
No programs for prevention or rehabilitation or surgery were
included in them.
However, the current Back
Units are complete care units for back disorders including
treatment from prevention to rehabilitation, and use all of
the recommended procedures contained in clinical practice
guidelines based on scientific evidence, including surgery.
Therefore, setting up the Kovacs Back Units in the Clinics
that the Foundation had already established entailed not only
broadening their objectives but also restructuring and remodeling
their facilities.
In those cases where the limitations of physical
space have prevented the remodeling of the facilities, some
services have been externalized. Thus, the essence
of the Units, that is, the coordinated work of various
specialists, with a shared criteria and scientific support,
although certain procedures are carried out at a separate
location. This is the case of surgery and the monitored physical
exercises in certain of the Kovacs Back Units situated in
their own private clinics, as is the case in the Balearic
Islands and Madrid. The first of the Back Units in clinics
belonging to the Foundation was constituted at the end of
1996.
The first of the Kovacs Back Units in clinics separate from
the Institution was constituted in Alicante, in 1997. This
was followed by the clinics in Barcelona (1998), Murcia (1999)
and Granada (1999) and in recent years, Zaragoza (2002), Málaga
(2003), Ibiza (2004) and Menorca (2004).
