  APPLIED TREATMENTS

In the Kovacs Back Units all treatments that have been scientifically proven to be effective are used, to the exclusion of all others. For this reason, as soon as the effectiveness of a new treatment is proven, this is incorporated into the treatment plan and replaces those recommended by available scientific evidence.

Each patient is studied and only recieves the treatment or treatments which the most up-to-date scientific evidence recommends for each particular case. The methods which, having proven to be effective, are currently applied in the Kovacs Back Units are:

The Spanish Back School: : the fastest and most effective way to teach people at risk of suffering back problems or who already suffer these how to protect the back. It is effective as prevention in healthy people, and in improving the autonomy and mobility of those who have back complaints.

The Spanish BackSchool teaches what is required to reduce the risk of suffering from back pain in the exercise of daily activities, including work, as well as the proper attitude to follow if pain reappears. Its usual structure is made up of three theory and practice classes each lasting 45 minutes, with a maximum of 10 pupils, although customized courses are given for specific groups, such as workers and elderly people, for whom these characteristics may vary.

Exercises: muscular exercise programmes which, lasting less than 30 minutes, are effective in preventing, curing or speeding up the recovery of a complaint, as well as to strengthen the back muscles and the abdomen. This helps to have more confidence in the back.

Exercises that may be recommended for one patient may be inadequate for another. The exercise program prescribed for each patient is therefore strictly individualized according to the specific complaint, to the previous state of his/her musculature and the to the results of a thorough physical exploration.

Drugs: Among all the studies performed worldwide to evaluate the effect of drugs, the Kovacs Foundation Scientific Department identifies those referring to back complaints and evaluates their scientific quality, in order to only select those with reliable results. This allows the Back Units to prescribe the most suitable drugs for each patient in order to achieve the maximum effectiveness at the lowest risk of side effects.

Neuroreflexotherapy Intervention (NRT): This is the superficial implantation of surgical material (staples and burins) on the nerve ends of the skin, without opening the skin. This stimulation triggers a neurological mechanism capable of eliminating pain, muscular contracture and inflammation in people with back pain, achieving the cure or persistent improvement of their complaints. All the surgical material is sterile and of a single use. Its implantation is practically painless, does not require anaesthesia and is perfomed on an outpatient basis.

NRT intervention is indicated for patients in whom complaints persist after 14 days of pharmacological treatment, or where this is contraindicated (for instance, pregnant women), and no criteria exist for emergency surgery. This is also one of the few treatments which are potentially effective for patients with whom surgery has previously failed.

Surgery: The surgeons of the Back Units are not only specialists of the greatest skill and ability, but the Kovacs Foundation also assures the continuous updating of their scientific criteria. Patients are therefore only operated on when surgery is truly indicated, and they use the most appropriate surgical techinques for each case according to current scientific studies and assessments.
