EVOLUTION OF HEALTH CARE OF THE KOVACS FOUNDATION OVER TIME.
Care-related activities of the Kovacs Foundation began in 1989, with the opening of the Clinic in the Balearic Islands. Others were subsequently set up in Asturias (1991) and in Madrid (1994). At this stage, the Clinics focused on conservative treatment of back complaints. No prevention, rehabilitation or surgery was performed.
The Kovacs Back Units are complete care units for back complaints, ranging from prevention through to rehabilitation and they use all the procedures that are recommended by the clinical practice guidelines based on scientific evidence, including surgery. The creation of the Kovacs Back Units within the Foundation's clinics therefore led to the extension of the Foundation's mission and the reform of its facilities.
In those cases in which the restriction on physical space have hindered the reform of facilities, some of the services have been externally located. The essence of the Units is thus preserved - the coordinated effort of several specialists with a common criteria and scientific support - although some of the procedures are carried out in a different location. This is the case with surgery and monitoring of physical exercise in some of the Kovacs Back Units located at its own clinics, such as those of the Balearic Islands and Madrid. The first Back Unit to be located in the Foundation's own clinics was created in 1996.
The first of the Kovacs Back Units located in clinics not belonging to the Institution was created in the San Carlos Clinical Center, in Alicante in 1997. This was followed by those of Barcelona (1998), Murcia (1999) and Granada (1999), at an ever-incresing pace.
