The motivation of physicians.

Title:

The motivation of physicians in Spain.

Background:

Health Care Services supply procedures to millions of citizens. The quality, number and cost of the procedures will depend on numerous factors, of which the motivation of physicians is a main factor.

Objective:

To describe the motivations of physicians, their perception on how the organizations meet their motivations, the nature of their commitment to the organization and the dedication of these professionals to their work.

Methodology:

It is a cross sectional descriptive study, carried out by means of a survey addressed to physicians in the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona.

The physicians polled are professionals who work in medical care in a medical center. The sample is made up of 990 physicians (440 from Barcelona and 550 from Madrid) selected at random and representing the full body of physicians in the provinces under analysis.

The physicians are given a self-administered and standardized questionnaire. This questionnaire collects data on the study variables (motivational structure, remuneration structure, commitment, dedication, characteristics of the individual and of the center).

Statistical calculations are performed on centralization and dispersion of the motivational structure, the remuneration structure, the commitment and the dedication of the sample of phyisicans, according to the characteristics of the individual and the center. Studies of crude and adjusted associations are carried out in order to identify the variables that are associated with motivational structure, remuneration structure, commitment and dedication of the sample of physicians.
