THE SPANISH BACK PAIN RESEARCH NETWORK

The improvement of clinical practice is the principal objective of the Spanish Back Pain Research Network. It is multidisciplinary in its structure, and is composed of 189 researchers belonging to 12 health care centers. These researchers belong to consolidated research groups, emergent research teams or clinical groups that have a strong research interest.

The only pre-requisite to join the Network is to be currently participating in a research project. The management of the Kovacs Foundation is in charge of its organization and administration. The Foundation is also responsible for the structural financing of the Network. Public and not for profit organizations can directly finance projects.

A Network project is developed in the following manner:

  • One of the groups proposes a research project.
  • A protocol is written up, with the multidisciplinary contributions of all groups.
  • Financing is sought.
  • An operative "subgroup" is formed with all the Network groups interested in its development.
  • Consensus is reached on authorship, publication policy, and working norms that ensure methodological quality.
  • Project startup and data collection is begun.
  • Data is analyzed and results are produced.
  • First and subsequent drafts of the article are written, and it is then submitted for publication in a scientific journal.
  • The research focus is on the following:

    1. Etiopathogenesis and physiopathology

    2. Ergonomy and biomechanics

    3. Primary and secondary prevention

    4. Patient diagnosis and evaluation

    5. Treatment

    6. Clinical practice

    7. Social and economic impact

In summary, the Spanish Back Pain Research Network and the Kovacs Foundation coordinate research and clinical teams that work together in a coordinated manner, and have carried out scientific studies that have been published in leading international journals. Their main interest is to develop studies in any area related to unspecific low back pain, taking into account the priorities of clinicians, patients, the general public, and the health authorities.
